Mason City's municipal track has been a fixture of north-central Iowa golf for generations, occupying the Highland Park area on the city's north side. Like many Midwestern municipal courses of its era, it was built to give everyday players a proper 18-hole layout without the barriers of private membership — and it has served that purpose reliably ever since. The flat-to-gently-rolling terrain typical of this part of Iowa means the course rewards ball-striking and course management over heroics, though the prairie winds that sweep through the region can turn a straightforward round into something considerably more demanding.
Mason City itself sits in Cerro Gordo County near the Minnesota border, a small city perhaps best known as the birthplace of Meredith Willson and the inspiration for "The Music Man." The local golf culture reflects the broader character of the region: unpretentious, welcoming, and quietly serious about the game.
As a public municipal facility, Highland Park is the kind of place where regulars walk the same fairways for decades, where juniors learn the game, and where a tee time is never more than a phone call away. It's honest, accessible golf in the heart of Iowa farm country.
