Placerville sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills along old Highway 50, the Gold Rush corridor that once carried fortune seekers toward the California mountains. The surrounding El Dorado County landscape is defined by rolling oak woodland, granite outcroppings, and the kind of dry summer heat that bakes fairways firm and fast by August. It's a region with genuine character — rough-edged and unpretentious — and golf here tends to reflect that sensibility.
Cold Springs Golf and Country Club is a private membership club serving a community that has long valued its distance from the suburban sprawl of Sacramento, roughly an hour to the west. Clubs like this one are the backbone of regional golf: places where members grow up playing the same 18 holes, learn every bounce and break, and develop the kind of course knowledge that makes a home handicap something you actually have to earn.
El Dorado County isn't a destination golf market, which means rounds here carry a locals-first atmosphere. If you find yourself on the tee at Cold Springs, you're almost certainly a guest of someone who calls it home.
