Mount Shasta itself dominates the skyline here in a way that makes it nearly impossible to focus on your pre-shot routine — the dormant volcano rises to over 14,000 feet just south of Weed, and on a clear morning it fills your entire field of vision. Weed sits at roughly 3,500 feet elevation in northern California's Shasta Valley, where the high-desert air is clean and thin, the light has a particular clarity, and the season runs shorter than golfers in the Bay Area or Sacramento might expect. It's a corner of the state that most California golfers drive through on I-5 without stopping.
The name "Championship" suggests a layout designed to stretch golfers rather than welcome them, though the specifics of the design history aren't something the scorecard resolves on its own. What the setting all but guarantees is a round defined by scenery as much as strategy — mountain views, volcanic terrain, ponderosa pines, and the kind of quiet that reminds you how far you are from a crowded tee sheet.
This is Northern California golf at its most remote and unhurried. Expect wildlife, wind off the mountain, and the occasional delay to appreciate where you actually are.
