Few clubs in Ireland carry quite the institutional weight of Cork Golf Club. Founded in 1888, it ranks among the oldest in the country and has long served as the social and competitive heart of golf in Munster. The course at Little Island was designed by Alister MacKenzie — the architect behind Augusta National and Cypress Point — and that pedigree is evident in the ground's imaginative use of contour, the strategic placement of hazards, and greens that reward thought as much as execution. It is a genuine MacKenzie canvas, and serious students of golf architecture make a point of playing it.
Little Island sits on a peninsula jutting into Cork Harbour, and the layout makes full use of the estuary setting — water comes into play on several holes, and the wind off the harbour can transform the challenge from one round to the next. The terrain rolls naturally, with mature trees framing many fairways without ever turning the course into a purely target-golf exercise.
As a private members' club, Cork maintains a traditional atmosphere, though visitors are welcomed on weekdays. The city of Cork itself is one of Ireland's most characterful — lively, food-proud, and deeply connected to its sporting identity — making a round here a natural anchor for any trip to the south of the country.
