Robert von Hagge redesigned this course in the mid-1990s, transforming a property in the hills above Cannes into one of the Riviera's most ambitious private layouts. Von Hagge was known for bold, theatrical design — dramatic contouring, water features deployed as genuine hazards rather than decoration, and greens with pronounced movement — and Royal Mougins reflects all of that. The course plays through umbrella pines and Mediterranean scrub on terrain that rises and falls with genuine consequence, rewarding precise ball-striking while punishing lateral misses with the kind of finality that separates resort golf from serious competition.
Mougins itself is a storied village perched above the Cannes–Grasse corridor, long associated with artists, chefs, and the well-heeled international crowd that gravitates to the Côte d'Azur. The golf here is very much part of that world — a members' and corporate environment where the standard is high and access is managed accordingly.
The European Tour has used the venue, which speaks to its conditioning and the seriousness of its design. Expect firm, fast conditions in summer and a layout that rewards course management over raw power.
