Chester sits at roughly 4,500 feet in the northern Sierra Nevada, where the air is thin and the ball flies farther than golfers expect. The town occupies a narrow strip of land between the Plumas National Forest and the western shore of Lake Almanor, a reservoir of striking scale and clarity fed by the North Fork of the Feather River. This corner of California is genuine mountain-and-lake country — volcanic peaks, lodgepole pine, and a short summer season that gives the region an almost precious quality when conditions are right.
Lake Almanor West Golf is a community course that reflects the unhurried character of the area. Without a resort apparatus or tournament pedigree to its name, the appeal here is more elemental: mountain air, tree-lined terrain, and the proximity to one of Northern California's most beautiful bodies of water. At par 72 it offers a full round without pretension.
For golfers making their way through the Feather River country — perhaps en route to Lassen Volcanic National Park or simply exploring California's quieter northern reaches — this is the kind of course where the surroundings matter at least as much as the scorecard.
