Few courses anywhere have earned their reputation as quickly as Kingsbarns. Opened in 2000 on the Fife coastline just a few miles south of St Andrews, it was carved from farmland and reclaimed links ground by American architect Kyle Phillips, who restored the connection between the land and the sea that had been lost for generations. The result was immediately celebrated — a course that looks and feels as though it has existed for centuries, with fairways tumbling toward the Eden Estuary and the North Sea visible from virtually every hole. It has consistently ranked among the top courses in the world and serves as one of the host venues for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship each autumn.
Kingsbarns sits at the heart of golf's most storied stretch of coastline. The Old Course at St Andrews is only minutes away, and the broader Kingdom of Fife carries a weight of golf history that few regions on earth can match.
The links plays firm and fast in dry conditions but can be brutally exposed when the wind comes off the water, which it frequently does. The routing along the clifftops and shoreline gives several holes a genuinely dramatic quality — this is links golf at its most visually compelling.
