Oakland Hills Country Club occupies a singular place in American golf history. The club's South Course is the famous one — "The Monster," the layout that has hosted more U.S. Opens than almost any other venue and humbled Ben Hogan, who famously called his final-round 67 in 1951 "the greatest round I ever played." The North Course shares that storied address in Bloomfield Hills but operates in the shadow of its celebrated sibling, offering members a less severe but still seriously considered companion layout on the same rolling, wooded Oakland County grounds.
Bloomfield Hills sits in the affluent northern suburbs of Detroit, an area with one of the densest concentrations of strong private clubs in the Midwest. Oakland Hills itself was designed by Donald Ross and has been refined over the decades, including Robert Trent Jones's famously punishing 1951 alterations to the South Course.
The North plays to a par of 70, which signals a design with character rather than length as its primary test — expect precision and course management to matter more than power.
