Few private clubs in San Diego have arrived with quite the pedigree of Santaluz. The course was designed by Rees Jones and opened in the early 2000s as the centerpiece of the Santaluz master-planned community in the Black Mountain Ranch area of northern San Diego — a development that won awards for the way it integrated architecture and open space into the surrounding chaparral landscape. Jones leaned into that terrain, routing the course through canyons and across natural ridgelines rather than flattening the land, which gives rounds here a wilder, more honest feel than many of San Diego's more manicured private offerings.
The setting rewards players who pay attention. Coastal sage scrub and native bunchgrasses line the fairways, red-tailed hawks are a regular presence overhead, and the views stretch toward the surrounding hills on clear days. The par-71 layout plays firm and fast when the Santa Ana winds arrive, and the canyon carries demand precise shot-shaping off several tees.
Santaluz draws a membership that values seclusion — this is a community club in the truest sense, not a tournament showcase. That low-key exclusivity gives it a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere that plenty of San Diego's flashier private clubs simply can't replicate.
