Tom Fazio's 1990 design at Emerald Dunes is one of South Florida's most celebrated public courses — an ambitious construction project that literally built a landscape where virtually none existed. Fazio imported millions of cubic yards of fill to create the rolling, rumpled dune-like terrain that gives the course its name, a striking anomaly on the flat coastal plain west of downtown West Palm Beach. The result is a course that feels genuinely dramatic rather than manufactured, with elevation changes uncommon anywhere in this part of Florida.
The layout has drawn consistent national attention and ranked among the top public courses in the state for years. It plays firm and fast when conditions allow, rewarding accurate ball-strikers while the generous use of waste areas, water, and stacked-sod bunkers keeps things honest for everyone. The finishing stretch is particularly memorable, with a closing hole that demands a decisive approach over water.
West Palm Beach sits at the heart of Florida's Gold Coast golf corridor, where the season runs essentially year-round and the winter months draw players escaping colder climates across the country.
