Lander sits in the heart of Wyoming's Wind River Country, wedged between the Wind River Range to the west and the high desert of the Wind River Basin to the east — one of the more dramatically framed small cities in the American West. At roughly 5,400 feet of elevation, the air is thin and the ball flies noticeably farther than it would at sea level, something first-time visitors tend to discover with a surprised grin on the first par 4.
Lander Golf Club is a classic small-town municipal layout, the kind of course that serves as a genuine community anchor — host to junior programs, weekend scrambles, and the sort of regulars who have played the same early-morning tee time for 20 years. Par-71 designs like this one often trade one par 5 for an extra par 3, creating a rhythm that rewards precise iron play as much as length off the tee.
The surrounding landscape does a lot of the work here. Wyoming's wide skies, sage-scented air, and the distant saw-toothed profile of the Wind Rivers give even a routine round an outsized sense of place. Lander itself is an outdoor-recreation town at its core — a base for climbers, hikers, and river runners — and the golf club fits naturally into that unpretentious, adventure-adjacent character.
