Few resort courses in the American Northwest carry the reputation Circling Raven does. Designed by Gene Bates and opened in 2003, the course is owned and operated by the Coeur d'Alene Tribe on the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation, and Golf Digest has repeatedly ranked it among the best public courses in Idaho — a meaningful distinction in a state with no shortage of scenic layouts. The name honors the raven, a figure of significance in tribal culture, and that sense of identity runs through the entire property.
The course sweeps through the wetlands, meadows, and pine forests of the Rathdrum Prairie, just south of Coeur d'Alene. Bates used the natural terrain generously, routing holes through native grasses and alongside water features that are as strategic as they are beautiful. It plays long and demands shape and course management, but the scenery has a way of softening the difficulty — at least until the scorecard catches up with you.
Worley sits roughly 35 miles south of Spokane, making Circling Raven genuinely accessible for a destination round. It is part of the Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort complex, so staying and playing is straightforward, and the combination of thoughtful design, tribal stewardship, and Pacific Northwest landscape gives this place a character you won't find at a standard resort operation.
