Mountain Home Air Force Base sits in the high desert of southwestern Idaho, about 50 miles southeast of Boise on the Snake River Plain. The landscape here is stark and wide-open — sagebrush, basalt, and big sky in every direction — with the Owyhee Mountains rising to the south and the distant Sawtooths visible on clear days. Silver Sage is a military installation course, which means it exists primarily to serve the airmen, families, and personnel stationed at one of the Air Force's premier fighter wings. Courses like this tend to offer solid, no-frills golf at accessible prices — a genuine benefit of base life, and often a well-kept secret for those with installation access.
The name alone tells you something about the setting. Silver sage is the low, silvery-grey shrub that defines this corner of the Intermountain West, and playing here almost certainly means flirting with it whenever a drive strays from the short grass.
