Tartagal sits in the far north of Salta province, close to the Bolivian border, where the subtropical Chaco forest gives way to the foothills of the Andes. It is frontier country — agricultural, unhurried, far removed from Argentina's better-known golfing corridors around Buenos Aires or Córdoba. Golf in this corner of the country tends to reflect the communities that built it: member-driven, locally rooted, and shaped more by regional character than by any design fashion imported from abroad.
Alto Verde Golf Club occupies that tradition. An 18-hole, par-72 layout in a town of this size and latitude is a genuine commitment to the game, and the surrounding environment almost certainly defines the round as much as the routing does. Expect the heat and humidity of the Gran Chaco to be a factor, along with the lush, dense vegetation that the region's rainfall produces. These are not conditions golfers from temperate climates take for granted.
For visitors passing through Salta's north on Route 34 — toward the Yungas cloud forests or across toward the Argentine Chaco — Alto Verde offers a rare chance to play golf at the edge of the known Argentine golf map, in a landscape that most touring players never reach.
