Perched on the highlands of West Seattle, this municipal course has been a cornerstone of Seattle's public golf scene since the 1930s. The layout occupies one of the most dramatically situated pieces of public land in the Pacific Northwest — the West Seattle peninsula rises sharply from Puget Sound, and the course captures sweeping views of downtown Seattle, the Olympic Mountains, and Elliott Bay that few private clubs anywhere in the region can match.
The terrain is genuinely hilly, a consequence of the same glacial topography that defines all of West Seattle, and that elevation change makes the course play with real variety and challenge. Mature evergreens — the Douglas firs and western red cedars that define Seattle's urban canopy — frame fairways throughout, keeping the round visually enclosed even as the panoramas open up from the higher points on the property.
For generations of Seattle golfers who learned the game here or made it their home course, West Seattle is less a round of golf and more a ritual. It remains one of the most affordable and accessible ways to play in a city that takes its public golf seriously.
