Orange County's rolling terrain does most of the talking at Stony Ford, a public course in Montgomery that sits within New York's Hudson Valley region. The land here is classic upstate New York — glacially shaped hills, open meadows, and the kind of countryside that surrounds you with sky once you're out of the city's orbit. Montgomery itself is a small Hudson Valley town where the pace slows considerably, and Stony Ford reflects that sensibility: accessible, unhurried, and rooted in the working-class public golf tradition that has long defined this part of the Northeast.
As a county-operated facility, the course serves a wide cross-section of Hudson Valley golfers — weekend regulars, beginners finding their footing, and commuters looking to decompress well north of the metro noise. That democratic character is part of what makes public golf in this region meaningful.
The surrounding landscape — farmland, wooded ridgelines, and the broad skies of the valley — gives a round here a sense of genuine remove, even if you're only 60 miles from Manhattan.
