Cathlamet sits on the Washington side of the lower Columbia River, a small timber and fishing town in Wahkiakum County that most travelers pass through on the way somewhere else. The surrounding landscape is defined by dense Douglas fir forests, rolling river bluffs, and the wide, gray-green expanse of the Columbia itself — terrain that tends to produce golf courses with genuine character, where elevation changes and tree corridors do the design work that architects elsewhere achieve with bunkers and water features.
Skyline Golf Course occupies that kind of setting, and the name suggests a layout that takes advantage of the high ground above town, with the views and uneven lies that come with it. A par 71 hints at a routing that may lean on par 3s or a shorter par 4 in place of a more conventional configuration — something to watch for as you map your game plan.
Wahkiakum County is lightly populated and far from the urban golf corridors of Portland or Seattle, which means Skyline likely serves a close-knit local membership and the occasional traveler curious enough to leave Highway 4 and see what's up the hill.
