Crestview sits in the Florida Panhandle's Okaloosa County, far enough from the resort bustle of Destin and Fort Walton Beach to feel like real, working-Florida golf. The landscape here is defined by longleaf pine, scrub oak, and the sandy, well-drained soils of the Gulf Coastal Plain — terrain that naturally suits golf and gives courses in this corner of the state a character distinct from the manicured resort corridors to the south.
The Blackwater name almost certainly draws from the Blackwater River, one of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the country and the centerpiece of a state forest that covers much of this part of Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties. If the course reflects its surroundings at all, expect pines framing tight corridors, natural sandy waste areas, and a layout that rewards accuracy over raw power.
For the local military community — Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field are both nearby — and Crestview residents alike, a full 18-hole, par-72 layout represents genuine, no-frills Panhandle golf: unhurried, unpretentious, and rooted in the kind of terrain that quietly makes northwest Florida a better golf destination than it usually gets credit for.
