Jack Nicklaus designed Grand Bear, and it opened in 1999 as part of a broader vision to establish Mississippi's Gulf Coast as a legitimate golf destination. The layout occupies a stretch of longleaf pine and wetland terrain in Saucier — a small community tucked into Harrison County, well north of the beachfront casinos that define most visitors' experience of the region. That inland setting gives the course a wilder, more naturalistic character than the resort-adjacent tracks closer to the water, and Nicklaus leaned into it, routing holes through corridors of mature timber with carries over marshland and generous but strategically contoured fairways.
The course earned serious attention early on, drawing rankings among the top public courses in the state and hosting competitive events that helped legitimize Mississippi as more than a casino golf afterthought. The Nicklaus design philosophy — heroic risk/reward decisions, reachable par 5s that still bite back, and large greens with pronounced tiers — is on full display here.
Saucier sits about 20 miles north of Biloxi, so the climate is classic Gulf South: warm most of the year, humid in summer, and largely forgiving in winter, which makes Grand Bear a realistic year-round destination.
