Few private clubs in New England have arrived with as much ambition as Greathorse. The club opened in 2016 on the grounds of the former Hampden Country Club, with the redesigned course crafted by Tom Fazio II — part of the next generation of the Fazio design dynasty. The routing occupies a stretch of rolling western Massachusetts woodland, and the result is a layout that demands both power and precision, with generous fairways giving way to carefully contoured greens that punish imprecision without feeling unfair.
Hampden sits in the Pioneer Valley, just east of Springfield, a region better known for basketball's birthplace than for golf. But the landscape here — mature hardwoods, natural elevation changes, the sharp New England seasons — gives the course genuine character that's hard to manufacture. Autumn rounds, when the canopy turns, are particularly striking.
Greathorse pitches itself as a full private-club experience, with amenities that extend well beyond the course itself. For members, it represents something relatively rare in this part of Massachusetts: a contemporary, well-resourced club built to a modern standard of conditioning and service.
