Few public golf courses in Greater Cleveland carry quite as much local history as Lost Nation. Operated by the city of Willoughby, it has served as an accessible, no-frills destination for Lake County golfers for decades — the kind of place where regulars have walked the same fairways since childhood and return season after season without needing a reason beyond habit and familiarity.
Willoughby sits in the heart of the Lake Erie shoreline corridor, northeast of Cleveland, where the landscape tends toward gentle, glacially flattened terrain broken up by creek corridors and mature hardwoods. Lost Nation reflects that setting — a layout that rewards course management and consistent ball-striking over raw power, playing through the kind of tall deciduous canopy that makes northern Ohio golf feel distinctly seasonal, particularly vivid in spring and fall.
As a municipal course, Lost Nation exists to keep the game open and affordable for everyone in the community. It draws a broad mix of players, from beginners getting their footing to low-handicappers who grew up competing here, and that democratic character is a big part of what defines it.
