Few golf courses on earth can claim a backdrop quite like this one. Gávea Golf & Country Club occupies a stretch of land in São Conrado, hemmed in by the Atlantic Forest of Tijuca on one side and the dramatic granite face of Pedra da Gávea on the other. Founded in 1923 and designed by British architect Peter Sutherland, it is one of the oldest clubs in South America, carrying more than a century of Rio society history within its hedgerows and fairways.
The layout reflects both its era and its constraints. With par set at 69, the course is compact and precise rather than a power test — the jungle and the mountains do the heavy lifting, demanding accuracy from players who might otherwise be distracted by one of the more extraordinary panoramas in world golf. Holes work around uneven terrain that no architect today would be permitted to touch.
Membership here has long been woven into Rio's cultural fabric, with the club functioning as a genuine social institution rather than simply a place to play. For visiting golfers, access is limited to guests of members, making a round at Gávea a genuine privilege and a window into a Rio that most tourists never see.
