Few courses in Scotland come with scenery quite this dramatic. Braemar Golf Club sits in Royal Deeside, the stretch of the Aberdeenshire countryside that follows the River Dee westward into the Cairngorms — the same landscape Queen Victoria fell in love with when she established Balmoral Castle nearby in the 1850s. That royal connection runs deep here: the village of Ballater grew up largely as a staging post for the royal household, and the whole valley carries a quietly grand, unhurried atmosphere that feels unlike anywhere else in Scottish golf.
The course itself plays as a shorter, par-65 layout, which reflects the terrain and the traditions of Highland golf rather than any lack of ambition. Courses in this part of Scotland were built to be walked and enjoyed as much as conquered, and Braemar fits that spirit entirely. At around 900 feet above sea level, it is one of the higher-elevation courses in the country, and the mountain air, the surrounding pinewoods, and the ever-present Cairngorm skyline make every round feel genuinely removed from the everyday.
Ballater is a small, handsome granite town that serves as a gateway to some of the most spectacular walking country in Britain. Golfers who find their way here tend to be the kind who care about where they are as much as what they shoot — and Braemar rewards exactly that sensibility.
