Few courses anywhere in the American interior demand as much attention as Awarii Dunes, a design carved through the rolling sand hills of south-central Nebraska that routinely earns mention among the most underrated public layouts in the Great Plains. The course takes its name from a Pawnee word for the dunes themselves, and that connection to the land feels intentional — fairways tumble and heave with the natural contours of the terrain rather than against them, giving the round a wild, unharnessed quality that manufactured resort courses rarely achieve.
Axtell sits in Kearney County, a stretch of Nebraska where the Platte River watershed gives way to grassland and open sky. The dunes landscape here is geologically related to the famous Sandhills region to the north, and Awarii earns honest comparisons to that celebrated golf country — firm, fast turf, persistent prairie wind, and sight lines that seem to extend forever.
This is destination golf that rewards the curious player willing to venture off the obvious path. The drive out is part of the experience.
