Pestana Vale da Pinta Golf Course

Few courses in the Algarve carry quite the same design pedigree as Vale da Pinta. Laid out by Ronald Fream in 1992 on a property developed by the Pestana group, it occupies terrain that still shows the bones of an ancient olive grove — centuries-old olive trees, some of them genuinely gnarled and monumental, frame many of the holes and give the course a character that no amount of landscaping can manufacture. Fream worked with the natural contours of the land rather than against them, producing a layout that rolls and tumbles through valleys and across ridges in ways that feel organic rather than constructed.

The course sits just inland from the fishing village of Carvoeiro, in the municipality of Lagoa, where the western Algarve begins to soften from the dramatic sea-cliff coastline into a quieter, more agricultural interior. The climate is reliably sunny for most of the year, which keeps the turf firm and fast and rewards players who run the ball rather than fly it in.

Vale da Pinta has consistently ranked among the better resort courses on the Algarve peninsula, appealing to visitors who want something with genuine scenic and strategic interest beyond the standard sun-and-sea holiday round. Its companion course, Gramacho, shares the same estate and provides a contrasting, more open experience for groups wanting variety across their stay.
