El Encín Golf

Few courses in the Madrid region carry as much institutional weight as El Encín. Owned and operated by the Community of Madrid, it was designed by Seve Ballesteros and opened in 1992, and it remains one of the most significant public-access layouts in Spanish golf — a genuine showcase of what municipally backed golf can look like when ambition matches investment.

Ballesteros brought his characteristic instinct for drama to the design: wide corridors that invite aggressive play but punish loose shots, greens that demand creativity around their edges, and a routing that uses the gently rolling meseta landscape with real intelligence. The course sits on the grounds of the El Encín agricultural research estate, which gives the property an unusual, almost parkland feel — mature trees, experimental plots nearby — uncommon for this dry, sun-baked stretch east of Madrid along the A-2 corridor toward Guadalajara.

El Encín has hosted European Tour events and served as a proving ground for Spanish professional golf. For visiting players, it offers a rare chance to walk a layout shaped by one of the game's all-time greats on land that feels genuinely different from the typical Castilian course.
