Few public golf courses in America can claim what Fossil Trace can: the fairways literally pass through documented prehistoric history. During construction in the late 1990s, workers uncovered dinosaur tracks and plant fossils embedded in the sandstone outcroppings — discoveries significant enough that paleontologists were brought in to assess and preserve them. Architect Jim Engh incorporated these formations directly into the design, making the fossils a living part of the playing experience rather than burying them. The result is one of Colorado's most acclaimed public courses, regularly ranked among the best in the state.
Golden itself sits at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon, where the Front Range foothills collide dramatically with the edge of the Great Plains. That collision defines the golf — elevation changes are real, the terrain is rugged and exposed, and the landscape carries the kind of raw, high-desert character that no amount of landscaping could manufacture.
Jim Engh is known for bold, inventive design, and Fossil Trace is widely considered his signature achievement. The routing takes full advantage of a former clay quarry, giving the course a dramatic, sculpted quality that feels nothing like a manufactured resort track.
