Few golf clubs anywhere carry quite the colonial-era weight of the Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling. Founded in 1889, it is one of Asia's oldest golf clubs, and its courses — the Old, the New, and the Eden — are woven into the fabric of Hong Kong sporting life across more than a century. The Old Course in particular holds a revered status, its mature trees, tight fairways, and subtle undulations demanding precision and local knowledge over raw power. It is a layout that rewards the thoughtful golfer rather than the bomber.
Fanling sits in the New Territories near the border with mainland China, a world apart from the density of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The surrounding countryside gives the courses a rare sense of space and quiet, and the club's traditional clubhouse adds to a feeling that time moves a little differently here.
The club has hosted the Hong Kong Open many times, bringing Asian Tour professionals to test these fairways. For anyone serious about golf in the region, a round at Fanling carries genuine historical resonance.
