The Indian Wells Golf Resort's Old Course carries the full weight of the Coachella Valley's golf history. Designed by Ted Robinson and opened in 1986, it was one of the resort's original layouts before a celebrated restoration by John Fought in 2007 brought it into the modern era. Robinson's waterscape fingerprints remain — lakes and streams thread through the property in the way he made famous across Southern California — while Fought's rework tightened the strategic demands and refreshed the bunkering. The course has served as host ground for PGA Tour events and, for decades, has been the kind of name-brand desert stop that regulars plan road trips around.
Indian Wells sits at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains in the eastern Coachella Valley, where the winters are reliably mild and the mountains provide one of the more dramatic backdrops in American golf. The desert palette — tan, rust, and deep blue sky — does as much for the atmosphere as any routing decision.
For visitors, the Old Course plays like a resort track that quietly bites back. Water comes into play on a majority of holes, and the mountain winds that funnel through the valley can reframe nearly any club selection. It rewards patience.
