Few courses anywhere carry more weight in the American golf imagination than TPC Sawgrass. Opened in 1980 and redesigned by Pete Dye in 1981, it became the permanent home of THE PLAYERS Championship — often called the fifth major — and that association has shaped how the entire world thinks about the course. Dye's Stadium Course concept was genuinely radical at the time, built from a swampy, featureless Florida site and sculpted into a layout with dramatic mounding designed to give spectators sightlines. The result redefined what a tournament venue could look like.
The 17th hole, the famous island-green par-3, is probably the most recognizable hole in professional golf — more balls have been swallowed by that surrounding water than almost any other spot in the game. The closing 18th, a par-4 finishing along a lake, demands composure under pressure that even the world's best players sometimes can't summon.
Ponte Vedra Beach sits just south of Jacksonville along Florida's First Coast, a stretch of barrier island and marshland that gives Sawgrass its distinctive wetland character. The TPC network here also includes the Dye's Valley Course, but the Stadium layout is the destination — a course that plays harder than any number suggests.
