Few towns in the American South sit as high as Boone — at roughly 3,300 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it's one of the highest-elevation communities east of the Mississippi. That altitude shapes everything about golf here: the air is thinner and cooler than the piedmont, ball flight carries differently than players accustomed to sea-level courses expect, and the mountain summer that draws visitors from the Carolina lowlands and beyond makes the region one of the most comfortable places to play in the eastern United States during July and August.
Boone Golf Club is a public-access mountain course where the terrain does the heavy lifting. The Blue Ridge landscape means elevation changes, tight corridors shaped by the natural topography, and views that periodically open up across the surrounding ridgelines. Par-71 layouts tend to shift the balance between par-4s and the longer holes, rewarding ball-striking and course management over sheer power.
The area is home to Appalachian State University, which gives Boone a lively, year-round energy unusual for a mountain town of its size — and the golf course serves as a genuine community anchor in a region where the scenery alone makes a round worth the trip.
