Southeastern Minnesota's bluff country is some of the most dramatic terrain in the upper Midwest — a landscape of steep wooded ridges, spring-fed streams, and deep river valleys carved by the Root River and its tributaries. Houston sits squarely in this Driftless Area, the glacially untouched region that gives the land its rugged, rolling character. For a golfer, that geography matters: courses here don't need to manufacture interest, the land provides it.
Valley High Golf Club works with that natural topography rather than against it, and the name says as much. An 18-hole layout in this kind of terrain is almost certain to involve elevation change, tight landing zones framed by timber, and shots that demand shape and commitment rather than just power. Par 71 suggests at least a couple of shorter or more exacting holes where precision earns more than distance does.
Houston itself is a small community along State Highway 16, a scenic corridor popular with cyclists, anglers, and outdoors-minded travelers. A golf round here pairs naturally with everything else the Root River valley offers.
