Few courses carry the weight of history that Muirfield does. The home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers — the oldest golf club in the world — this East Lothian links has hosted the Open Championship more times than almost any other venue, producing champions from Harry Vardon and Walter Hagen to Jack Nicklaus, who named his own course after it, and Tiger Woods. First laid out in its current form by Old Tom Morris in 1891 and refined by Harry Colt and Tom Simpson in 1925, it is widely regarded as the most fair and readable links in championship golf, presenting its challenges openly rather than hiding them in blind shots and artifice.
The course sits on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, with views toward Edinburgh and the Highland hills beyond. East Lothian's golf corridor — Gullane, North Berwick, Dunbar — is arguably the richest concentration of links golf on earth.
Muirfield's two loops of 9 holes run in opposite directions, a design that ensures the wind never plays the same way twice and rewards intelligent course management over sheer power. Private and famously selective, a round here remains among the most coveted experiences in the game.
