Few American cities carry a heavier naval identity than Norfolk, and Sewells Point Golf Course sits squarely within that world — a military installation course on the grounds of Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world. That setting alone makes it unlike almost any other 18-hole layout in Virginia: perimeter fencing, flight operations overhead, and a membership drawn almost entirely from active-duty personnel, their families, and Department of Defense civilians. The course is part of the base's Morale, Welfare and Recreation program, which means it exists to serve the people who serve.
The Sewells Point peninsula juts into the confluence of the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads, so the surrounding water is never far from the atmosphere even if it doesn't play directly into every hole. The coastal Tidewater environment means humidity, warm seasons that stretch well into autumn, and winds off the harbor that can quietly add strokes without announcing themselves.
For those with base access, it represents the kind of unpretentious, workaday golf that military courses do well — affordable, sociable, and refreshingly free of the pretensions that inflate greens fees elsewhere.
