Few golf venues anywhere carry a backstory quite like Skibo Castle's. This was Andrew Carnegie's personal Scottish estate — the Pittsburgh steel magnate bought the property in 1898 and transformed it into one of the great private retreats of the Edwardian era. Today the Carnegie Club maintains that same exclusive, members-and-guests-only character, meaning a round here is less a tee time and more an invitation into a living piece of history. Madonna's 2000 wedding to Guy Ritchie brought the estate back into global headlines, but for golfers the draw runs considerably deeper.
The course sits in the Highlands of Sutherland, just a few miles from Royal Dornoch — one of the finest links in the world — which tells you something about the quality of the golfing landscape here. The Dornoch Firth and the surrounding countryside offer sweeping, open terrain shaped by coastal winds that can reframe the challenge of any hole without warning.
Access through the Carnegie Club is deliberately limited, which gives a round at Skibo an uncommon weight. You are not simply playing golf — you are playing Carnegie's golf course, on his estate, in a corner of Scotland that has changed remarkably little since he first walked it.
