Gabriola Island sits in the southern Strait of Georgia, a short ferry ride from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island's east coast. One of the Gulf Islands, it's a place defined by sandstone shoreline, arbutus trees, and the unhurried pace of a community that has long attracted artists, retirees, and people deliberately stepping back from mainland life. Golf here isn't a destination resort proposition — it's a genuine local institution serving an island of a few thousand permanent residents.
Gabriola Golf and Country Club reflects that community character. An 18-hole layout at par 71 on an island of this size is a meaningful commitment, and the course almost certainly works with the island's natural contours of second-growth forest and rocky outcroppings rather than against them. Expect a layout where local knowledge matters — where the trees close in, the terrain breaks unpredictably, and the atmosphere is more about the pleasure of being outside on a Gulf Island afternoon than about championship conditioning.
Visiting golfers arrive the same way everyone arrives on Gabriola: by BC Ferries from Nanaimo, which frames the round before you've even pulled on a glove. That short crossing sets the tone — this is golf at a remove from the ordinary.
