Few public courses in the Baltimore area have built the kind of consistent, loyal following that Waverly Woods has earned since opening in 1999. Designed by Arthur Hills, the layout moves through the rolling hardwood-forested terrain of Howard County with a sense of intention — fairways that bend and pitch with the land rather than against it, and greens complexes that reward thoughtful shot selection over raw power. It regularly appears on Maryland's top public course lists and is widely regarded as one of the better everyday-access tracks in the greater Baltimore-Washington corridor.
Howard County sits in a transitional zone between the Mid-Atlantic Piedmont and the outer Baltimore suburbs, and Waverly Woods reflects that setting well — mature oaks and maples frame most holes, fall color can be spectacular, and the course plays firm and fast in summer. The routing makes strong use of elevation change, so the walk feels like genuine country even though you're a short drive from I-70.
For a public fee course, the conditioning here is a genuine point of pride, and the membership-style atmosphere — a busy but well-run operation — has kept it a go-to for serious Baltimore-area golfers for going on 3 decades.
