Few settings in American golf match the sheer audacity of Liberty National's location. Perched along the Hudson River waterfront in Jersey City, the course looks directly across the water at the Manhattan skyline, with the Statue of Liberty standing in the middle distance and Ellis Island just to the south. It is one of the most dramatic backdrops in the sport, and the club was built with full awareness of that fact.
Tom Kite and Bob Cupp designed Liberty National, which opened in 2006 on a brownfield site that required extensive environmental remediation before a single blade of grass could grow. The transformation was radical — a polluted industrial waterfront became one of the most visually arresting private clubs in the country. The Tour Championship and the Presidents Cup (2017) have both been held here, giving it a foothold in elite competitive golf and introducing its wide fairways and sculpted bentgrass to a global television audience.
The club operates at the highest tier of private golf, with service and presentation to match its ambitions. Playing here is less about the land and more about spectacle — a course that wears its setting as its central design feature.
