Few courses in the Illawarra region carry as much layered character as this one. Kembla Grange sits on the coastal escarpment fringe south of Wollongong, where the land flattens out from the dramatic Illawarra ranges before reaching the Pacific. It's horse country as much as golf country — the area has long been home to one of New South Wales' most storied racetracks, and that agricultural, open-paddock feel carries through to the course itself, giving The Grange a distinctly unhurried, regional Australia atmosphere that resort layouts rarely capture.
Wollongong's golf scene tends to fly under the radar compared to Sydney, but the city and its surrounds support a strong local club culture, and The Grange sits comfortably within that tradition. The climate here is temperate and coastal, meaning the turf stays relatively consistent year-round, and rounds are rarely interrupted by the extremes that afflict inland New South Wales.
For visiting golfers, this is the kind of course that rewards a relaxed mindset — a par-72 layout where the surrounding landscape does much of the talking, and the straightforward pleasures of club golf in a genuinely authentic Australian setting more than justify the drive south from Sydney.
