Sunday River Golf Club sits at the base of one of New England's premier ski mountains, and the elevation changes that make the resort famous in winter translate into a genuinely dramatic golf experience in summer. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the course, routing it through the rugged Oxford Hills terrain of western Maine at elevations that produce sweeping views of the Mahoosuc Range. The layout opened in 2004 and quickly earned a reputation as one of the more challenging mountain courses in the Northeast.
RTJ Jr.'s design makes full use of the site's contours — fairways tumble and bank through forested corridors, approach shots play to elevated or perched greens, and the changes in grade demand real shot-shaping rather than flat, mechanical ball-striking. The Bear River winds through portions of the property, adding both aesthetic character and strategic risk.
Newry sits in the Androscoggin River Valley, a working mountain town rather than a resort artifice, and the course carries that same no-frills authenticity. The short Maine summer means the season is compressed but vivid — expect cool mornings, firm turf by midseason, and fall rounds framed by foliage that rivals anything in the golf world.
