There are stretches of Highway 4 through Calaveras County where the ponderosa pines close in tight and the elevation climbs past 4,000 feet, and it's along this corridor — in the small mountain town of Arnold — that Sequoia Woods Country Club makes its home. This is Sierra Nevada foothills golf at its most atmospheric: cool summers, the scent of conifers, and the kind of light that filters through tall timber in ways the valley floor never sees.
At par 76 and stretching to 6,856 yards, the course carries a slightly generous par that suggests some length is available off the tee — but with a slope of 132 and a course rating of 72, the math is clear: this layout earns its difficulty honestly. Tree-lined corridors demand shape and accuracy over raw power, and the elevation changes that come with mountain terrain put a premium on course management.
Ten sets of tees spanning from 4,875 to 6,856 yards speak to a membership that uses this course seriously, from beginners finding their footing to low-handicappers chasing something closer to the card.
As a private club, Sequoia Woods operates as a genuine retreat — a members' world set apart from the tourist traffic of Gold Rush Country below. The mountains do most of the decorating here, and they do it well.
