Perquimans County sits at the confluence of 3 rivers in the Albemarle Sound region of northeastern North Carolina — one of the oldest settled corners of the state, where colonial-era towns share the landscape with miles of open water, marsh grass, and low tidal flats. Sound Golf Links takes its name directly from that geography, and the course makes the most of it, playing through terrain that is characteristically flat but animated by water views and the breezy, exposed conditions that come with building close to a major estuarine sound.
Hertford itself is a small, quiet town that flies well under the radar of North Carolina's better-known golf destinations, but that remoteness is part of the appeal. Golfers who make the trip tend to find a relaxed, unhurried round rather than the manicured pressure of a resort or tournament venue. The Albemarle region doesn't draw destination golf crowds, which means tee times are rarely a scramble and the pace of play reflects the pace of the place.
For a par 72 layout in this corner of the state, expect a course shaped by water — not dramatic elevation changes, but strategic placement, coastal wind, and the kind of wide-open sky that makes every round feel a little bigger than the scorecard suggests.
