Thoroughbred Golf Club sits at the heart of the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, a small western Michigan town that has quietly become one of the state's more interesting golf destinations. The course takes its name from the resort's equestrian heritage — Double JJ has deep roots as a working ranch, and that cowboy-and-country character gives the property a personality you don't often find attached to a golf layout. Rothbury itself sits in Oceana County, close enough to Lake Michigan that the air carries that particular Great Lakes freshness, and the surrounding terrain is a mix of forest, rolling farmland, and the sandy soil that underlies some of Michigan's best golf.
As a resort course, Thoroughbred is designed to be memorable for guests who may play it just once — wide enough to welcome a range of handicaps while offering enough variety to hold the interest of better players. The broader Double JJ property keeps things lively well beyond the 18th green.
Western Michigan's golf season runs roughly May through October, and the region draws visitors who combine beach time on the Lake Michigan shoreline with serious rounds inland. Rothbury puts you within reach of several well-regarded courses, making it a practical base for a dedicated golf trip rather than simply a one-round stop.
