Sequoyah Country Club carries one of the more distinguished pedigrees in Northern California golf. The club dates to 1913 and its course was designed by William Watson, the Scottish-born architect responsible for several landmark Bay Area layouts. The grounds occupy the lower hills of Oakland's Sequoyah district, where the terrain rolls and rises in ways that demand creativity off the tee and reward precise iron play into small, well-defended greens. At par 70, the course plays shorter than a traditional championship test, but Watson's routing uses elevation change and strategic bunkering to keep the card honest — length was never the point here.
The setting is quintessentially East Bay: rolling oak-studded hillsides, views reaching across the flatlands toward the bay, and a Mediterranean climate that keeps the turf firm and fast through the long dry summer.
Sequoyah has long served as a cornerstone of Oakland's private golf community, a club where the membership is tight-knit and the course has changed little in spirit from Watson's original vision — which, more than a century on, remains the strongest argument for leaving it alone.
