Berkeley Springs carries a certain timeless quality — it's the oldest spa town in America, a place where George Washington once took the waters and where the Cacapon River winds through the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. The surrounding Cacapon Mountain rises sharply from the valley floor, and the state park that bears its name stretches across thousands of acres of hardwood forest, offering one of the more atmospheric settings for public golf in the mid-Atlantic region.
The course itself is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design, one of several he created for the West Virginia state park system in the 1970s, and it carries his characteristic thoughtfulness about terrain. The routing moves through mature forest with mountain views opening at various points across the round, giving the layout a genuine sense of place rather than just a cleared corridor through trees.
As a state park facility, Cacapon is accessible and affordable — the kind of course where you can walk, take your time, and simply enjoy being outdoors in the Appalachian hills. The fall season, when the hardwoods turn, is particularly worth the trip.
