Few Highland courses carry a sense of living history quite like Strathpeffer Spa. The club dates to 1888, born during the Victorian era when Strathpeffer itself was one of Scotland's most fashionable spa resorts, drawing visitors from across Britain to take its sulphurous waters. Golf was a natural addition to the entertainment on offer, and the course has occupied the hillside above the village ever since, outlasting the grand hotels and pump rooms that once defined the town's identity.
The layout climbs steeply into the hills southwest of the village, and the terrain is the story here. Heather, bracken, and the kind of uneven lies that Highland golf demands make this a genuine test of shot-making and course management despite its shorter par. The elevated positions deliver sweeping views across the Strathpeffer valley and toward the peaks of the Northern Highlands — scenery that is genuinely distracting in the best possible way.
This is a members' club rooted in its community, informal and welcoming to visiting golfers. Playing here feels less like ticking off a destination course and more like stepping into an unbroken thread of Scottish golf history.
