Cabot Cliffs

Few courses anywhere have arrived with the immediate authority of Cabot Cliffs. Opened in 2016 as the second course at the Cabot Cape Breton resort, it was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw — architects who built their reputation on restraint and reading the land — and the site they were handed is among the most dramatic pieces of golf ground on the continent. The holes move through boreal forest before bursting onto the cliffs above the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where the ocean fills the horizon and the wind becomes a constant, unignorable playing partner. Golf Digest and others have ranked it among the best courses in the world within years of opening, a rare consensus.

The stretch of holes along the water — particularly the par-3 16th, where the tee shot carries across a chasm to a green perched at cliff's edge — has already earned the kind of reverence usually reserved for courses a century old.

Cape Breton Island itself sets the tone before you ever grip a club. The Cabot Trail, the Celtic cultural heritage, the raw North Atlantic weather — this is not a destination that coddles. Summers are brilliant but brief, and the wind off the gulf can reshape a round in minutes. That exposure is the point.
