Few links courses carry as much atmosphere as Royal St David's. Laid out in the shadow of Harlech Castle — a 13th-century fortress that looms over the dunes from its rocky perch — the course occupies one of the most dramatic settings in British golf. Founded in 1894 and granted its royal charter in 1908, it has long been considered one of Wales's finest courses and regularly features among the top links layouts in the United Kingdom. The design demands precision over brute force, with tight fairways, firm turf, and the wind off Cardigan Bay capable of turning a straightforward round into a serious examination.
Harlech itself sits on the southern edge of Snowdonia, and on a clear day the mountains form a backdrop behind the castle while the Lleyn Peninsula stretches across the water to the north. It is genuinely one of the great views in golf.
The par of 69 is not a concession to ease — it reflects a course that asks you to score on its terms. Royal St David's has hosted the Home Internationals and numerous Welsh championships, and it plays with all the unforgiving integrity you'd expect from a links of genuine historic stature.
