Few courses in American golf carry more history per square foot than Merion's East Course. Opened in 1912 and shaped by Hugh Wilson, a club member with no formal design training who spent months studying British links before drafting his masterpiece, it has become one of the most celebrated layouts in the world. It has hosted 5 U.S. Opens, 2 U.S. Amateurs, and a remarkable collection of defining moments — Bobby Jones completing his 1930 Grand Slam, Ben Hogan's legendary 1-iron on the 72nd hole in 1950, and Lee Trevino's playoff victory in 1971. The wicker baskets atop the flagsticks, a Merion tradition since the beginning, remain one of golf's most recognizable signatures.
The course sits on a compact 120 acres in the Philadelphia Main Line, a fact that astonishes first-time visitors. Despite its modest footprint, Merion demands precision over power — the classic par 70 layout rewards placement, creativity, and course management at every turn.
