Vestmannaeyjavöllur

Few golf courses on earth demand this kind of approach. Vestmannaeyjavöllur sits on Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, reached by ferry or small plane off Iceland's south coast. The course occupies ground shaped by volcanic forces — the 1973 Eldfell eruption buried a third of the town in lava and ash, and the landscape still carries that raw, unsettled drama. Playing here means tee shots framed by jagged lava fields, steep sea cliffs, and the cone of Eldfell rising directly above the fairways. The Atlantic is rarely out of sight, and the wind is almost never out of the equation.

Golf arrived on Heimaey in the 1980s, and the club has developed a course that works with the island's extreme topography rather than fighting it. The greens are typically tight and quick, and wind direction can transform a hole's entire character from one round to the next.

The Vestmannaeyjar islands also host one of Iceland's most famous natural spectacles — millions of puffins nest here each summer — which means a mid-round distraction of an entirely different kind. This is golf at the edge of the habitable world, and it plays like it.
